LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 3, 1998--Mark H. Kurtich, vice president of operations for the Los Angeles Times, has been promoted to senior vice president of operations, announced Kathryn Downing, president and chief executive officer of The Times.

Kurtich, 46, is responsible for all production operations at The Times' Olympic, San Fernando and Orange County facilities and oversees a staff of more than 1,100. Since joining The Times in 1997, Kurtich has supervised several initiatives to enhance the quality of the newspaper's color production including improved automated color registration and ink-density measurement systems. He also helped implement the expanded printing capability of Times Community News (TCN), a Times Mirror subsidiary that publishes daily and weekly community newspaper and "Our Times" sections that provide local news coverage for communities in Santa Monica and Ventura County.
Kurtich began his career at The Hartford Courant as a composing room trainee in 1971. He subsequently held a variety of jobs in operations, including assistant pre-press supervisor, assistant production manager, production manager, production director, vice president of operations and customer service and vice president of circulation and customer service.
Kurtich is a member of the Newspaper Association of America's Technology & Telecommunications and Packaging & Distribution committees, and is a committee member of Times Mirror's METPRO.biz, a program created to enhance the diversity of business leaders throughout the organization.
