Legend has it that when the young Louis Armstrong first came to Chicago in 1922 at the invitation of Creole Jazz Band maestro King Oliver, Armstrong quickly stole the show from his bandleader, also a trumpet player. Armstrong's presence greatly heightened the profile of the hand, of course, but much at the expense of Oliver, who was accustomed to claiming the spotlight as its ostensible main attraction.
