MP3 reproduces digital music flawlessly in a file format small enough to be transported easily. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) wants a keyed encryption scheme to be added to audio codecs to require a key be bought to play the music. Liquid Audio, Microsoft, AT&T Labs, Sony and other vendors are promoting alternatives to MP3 to support this. The Microsoft Media Player (MMP) is included with Windows 95, 98 and NT, but these versions do not always support MP3, although upgrades are available on Microsoft's web site.
