PARIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 17, 2000
www.festival-cannes.org is Akamaized; Web site features film
and daily festival video highlights delivered via Akamai's
FreeFlow Streaming technology
Akamai Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:AKAM), the foremost provider of global, high performance services for the delivery of Internet content, streaming media, and applications, today announced that World Media Live, producer of the official site of the 53rd Cannes Film Festival [www.festival-cannes.org], selected Akamai to ensure the successful online delivery of over 240 film and festival video clips during the 12-day event which debuted last week. In addition to using Akamai's FreeFlow(SM) Streaming service to deliver high quality, reliable streams throughout the event, the Cannes Film Festival Web site is using Akamai's FreeFlowSM service for the fast delivery of rich content found on the site.
From May 10 to 21, 2000, World Media Live and Akamai will enable both broadband and narrowband users visiting the international festival's official Web site to participate in the event highlights. End users will be able to access festival news on-demand including celebrity press conferences, photo sessions, and on-the-scene footage as actors and actresses take part in a 'Red Carpet' ceremony.
Available in both Apple QuickTime and Windows Media Technologies formats with video production and encoding handled by DBee, a leading European production and encoding company, the delivery of the film festival's on-demand videos via Akamai's revolutionary FreeFlow Streaming service has dramatically improved the reliability and quality of the streaming media content. Since the debut of the festival on May 10, Akamai has delivered over 1,300 hours of streamed content, making the 53rd Cannes Film Festival one of World Media Live's most successful events ever.
"World Media Live is one of the pioneers of bringing televised video to the Internet. In particular, it has broadcast the Tour de France bicycle race since 1995 and the Cannes Film Festival since 1998. Putting the highlights of the Cannes Film Festival online requires supplying a bilingual site dedicated to an event with an international audience 24 hours a day for two weeks. To guarantee that the videos can be downloaded at any time and on all continents, we have given the job to Akamai, which has demonstrated its ability in this area," states Bertrand Pecquerie, General Manager, World Media Live.
"We are honored to have been chosen by World Media Live to deliver content for such a prestigious site dedicated to covering the Cannes Film Festival. The technical challenge of delivering thousands of streams over several days is well within the expertise of Akamai," confirms Bernard Seite, Managing Director Southern Europe, Akamai.
Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service is built upon the Company's EdgeAdvantage(TM) platform that uses sophisticated algorithms to monitor the Internet on a real-time basis, understand the location of the requesting user, and make intelligent decisions about the best and most efficient Akamai edge server from which to deliver content to the end user. In addition, FreeFlow Streaming incorporates Akamai's proprietary SteadyStream(SM) technology that splits encoded broadcast signals into multiple streams sent across the Akamai network, and then recombines them at the edge of the Internet to recreate the streams in their original high-quality format. SteadyStream uses both satellites and the terrestrial Internet to seamlessly deliver streams to the edge with real-time decision and performance monitoring.
For a content provider, Akamai's FreeFlow Streaming service is easy to implement in addition to providing an entire solution for on-demand or broadcast events. Akamai is the first Internet content delivery service provider to announce support for all of today's popular streaming formats.
