Mobile Business Traveler: Keep Safe This Holiday Season

PrintThere is no doubt that this is a busy time of the year for travel, and the Imaging Industry Association has some advice that is sound the whole year round. Among the most important advice is that you shouldn't put lithium batteries in checked luggage, as these have a fire risk.
"In my travels to international standards meetings in various parts of the world this year, I have been reminded by TSA inspectors and airline personnel to remove ALL lithium batteries from my checked baggage," said I3A Standards Director James Peyton. "These warnings occurred at airports in North America, Asia and Europe."
I3A thus recommends that travelers carry any spare lithium batteries in carry-on luggage only. Other advice from the I3A includes:

I'd like to add that you should watch your devices very carefully. It is hard to avoid "crowded" areas in an airport at any point, but during the holidays is certainly no exception. Keep an eye on your possessions, and in my opinion it is never a good idea to place DVDs, phones, computers or other electronics in checked bags. Not only are these now required to be unlocked, but the holidays are a times when thefts increase as it is all too easy to open a bag and grab the good stuff.

- Digital cameras/media/camera phones - anything that doesn't use a lithium battery is safe in carry-on or checked bags (but I'd personally recommend not leaving these open to temptation)
- Low-speed color film, exposed or unexposed - is not safe in checked bag, and should be hand checked if it has been through scanners several times
- High-speed film (greater than ISO 800) - should only be checked by hand inspection only, and shouldn't go through metal detectors. The same is true for motion picture film (exposed or unexposed) and black-and-white film.

- If bringing work or other digital information, make a back up and if possible post this information to a secure Web site, so you can access it even if your laptop or other devices are lost or broken
- Update your mobile phone's contacts before heading to the airport
- Bring a print out of your travel information should your phone die!
