Support of New Industry Standard Allows ISPs to Broaden Coverage

of IPv6 Internet Access

NTT Multimedia Communications Laboratories (MCL), a wholly owned subsidiary

of NTT Communications -- NTT America, announced today it will offer Internet Exchange (IX) services based on a new Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) network located in NTT America's San Jose Data Center.

At the Global IPv6 Summit held in Colorado this week, NTT MCL unveiled plans for its new IX services and announced services will be commercially available April 2000. NTT Communications' Global IPv6 network will be the first to link up to NTT MCL's IPv6 IX.

IPv6, Internet Protocol version 6, is an important part of the future infrastructure of the Internet, as it offers improvements over IPv4 -- most notably its infinite number of IP addresses. The current shortage of IPv4 addresses presents a large problem for the Wireless industry which has recently offered Wireless Internet access requiring new demands for IP addresses.

"Through our new Internet Exchange (IX) service, we are making it easier for everyone in the world to access the Internet," said Dr. Masaki Ito, president and CEO of NTT Multimedia Communications Labs.

"Support for IPv6 is a big win for Wireless services, where a shortage of IPv4 addresses will be a huge problem. In addition, service providers will now have easy access to IX services based on the coming -- new Internet technology."

As companies and service providers migrate to Version 6 they will need a commercially supported IPv6 IX such as the one NTT MCL announced today. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will use NTT MCL's Internet Exchange (IX) and NTT Communications' IPv6 network to connect to national and international ISPs.

Availability

NTT MCL's IPv6 IX service will be available April 2000.
