Mark Logic Corp. recently took its software into the cloud with MarkLogic Cloud Services. Users can now access the company's signature XML technology via Amazon Web Services.

For starters, the cloud services offer three-step ease for users: simplicity of architecture, rapid web application development, and instant access. The MarkLogic Server for Amazon EC2 also offers a payby-the-hour service on EC2. If users opt to subscribe to the MarkLogic Server Amazon Machine Image (AMI) from Amazon Web Services, they pay only for the resources they need. "Om" customers requested the option of pay-as-you-go services," says John Kreisa, the director of product marketing at Mark Logic. "So if a user only needs one hour, that's all he will be paying for."

"In the cloud, simplicity is king," says Kreisa. "The XML protocol is simple and easy to integrate," he says. "In fact, users can rely on rapid deployment." And the timing is right to move existing work and licensing into the cloud. When much of IT is trying to reduce costs and increase efficiencies today, many are out there in the cloud already.

"We're extremely excited by what we accomplished in 2009," says Kreisa. "It was a good year for Mark Logic, despite the tough economic situation." Part of the company's growth can be attributed to the media investing in digital products, he says. The other business growth has been generated in the federal and civilian space, with the addition of the National Archives and the Library of Congress as customers. "We're well-positioned for continued growth in 2010," he says.

Mark Logic stays in tune to the needs and suggestions of its customers. "We rely on customer insights and feedback," says Kreisa. "And we have mechanisms in place to do that with our direct sales team, project management staff, focus groups, and the like. The relationships we have with our customers help us develop new strategies for digital projects and the ways in which companies are trending," he says.
