The word journalism may become the preferred term over mass communication because of new technology involving specialized delivery of information that creates niches. Academics started using the term mass communication in the 1970s to include fields such as public relations and advertising. But in the mid-1990s, content and its providers dominate the field, and mass communication no longer is as useful or descriptive as it was previously.
