Intermedia to Use ASC's MultiStream(TM) Technology for Industry's

First Multi-link Frame Relay Data and Internet Access Services

Combining state-of-the-art access network technology

with one of the nation's most robust, end-to-end network communications providers, Advanced Switching Communications, Inc (ASC) announced today that it has secured a network equipment purchasing agreement with Intermedia Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:ICIX). The four-year deal includes Intermedia's purchase of ASC's broadband access products with a potential value of $20 million. With the agreement, Intermedia will deploy ASC products in points-of-presence (PoPs) throughout the country for its next generation broadband network services.

ASC's products with MultiStream(TM) technology will enable Intermedia to deliver the industry's first multi-link frame relay access solution. This service will offer Intermedia's customers a spectrum of data, Internet access and private line replacement bandwidth options previously unavailable to business customers.

"With ASC's innovative and cost-effective solutions, Intermedia is prepared to accelerate a new generation of integrated services. An Intermedia-ASC alliance will reinforce Intermedia's leadership in bringing state-of-the-art enhancements to our access network and first-to-market broadband services to our customers," said David C. Ruberg, Intermedia's Chairman, President, and Chief Executive Officer.

"Combining ASC's MultiStream technology and product scalability with Intermedia's national network reach creates a powerful customer offering," said Asghar Mostafa, ASC's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Because ASC products scale to both very low and very high densities, Intermedia will be able to offer the same next-generation broadband services to growing businesses of all sizes."

MultiStream and Industry Firsts

ASC's groundbreaking technology builds state-of-the-art software flexibility into telecommunications hardware and will enable Intermedia to cost-effectively enhance its existing infrastructure. MultiStream incorporates technology that bundles two or more high-speed connections, providing Intermedia a platform to offer businesses an unprecedented variety of broadband access options. MultiStream effectively bridges the bandwidth and cost gap between relatively inexpensive, easily available T1 circuits (1.5 Mbps) and expensive, often hard to obtain T3 circuits (45 Mbps). Intermedia will be able to offer customers an incremental bandwidth path from lower speeds, such as 64 Kbps, to broadband speeds of 12 Mbps, all without service interruption. MultiStream supports multiple services, including ATM and frame relay, on a port-by-port basis. Bundling of connections for both ATM and frame relay, via industry standards inverse multiplexing over ATM (IMA) and multi-link frame relay (MFR), respectively, is also selectable on a port-by-port or customer-by-customer basis.

With MultiStream, ASC is the first in the industry to support standards-based MFR, ratified in September as FRF.16 by the Frame Relay Forum. The capability of providing IMA and MFR support on the same platforms and the same ports is another industry first, and provides maximum flexibility in delivering a range of services. ATM and IMA combined with ASC's quality of service (QoS) capabilities can be used to offer converged voice and data services, while frame relay and MFR are excellent for data specific applications, such as high speed Internet access.

Broadband Services Access Platform

ASC's "pizza-box" sized, stackable devices will enable Intermedia to expedite the delivery of high-speed Internet access and broadband voice and data services to its business customers, while also providing a smooth migration path to ASC's high density A-4000 chassis. ASC's aggregation platforms will bring a new level of ease and simplicity to broadband services by enabling Intermedia to provision different services as well as additional bandwidth remotely via software. Using MultiStream, Intermedia will be able to offer customers broadband Internet access speeds from 1 Mbps to up to 45 Mbps without any changes in customer or network equipment.

"Frame relay services currently represent a massive market for carriers, with revenues of over $8 billion worldwide," said Andrew Cray, senior analyst at Aberdeen Group (Boston), a market research and consulting firm. "It's a service that is still growing rapidly, but like other services it needs to scale to support the astounding number of new applications that enterprises are introducing to their networks. The value of MultiStream is that it delivers a bandwidth boost for those customers, using the technology they are familiar with today."
