SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 25, 2001
Adaptive Broadband Corporation(TM)(Nasdaq:ADAP) announced that its fixed broadband wireless access technology helped hundreds of small and medium-sized businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area
NextWeb, an Internet Service Provider (ISP) based in Fremont, California, said its subscriber base of small and medium-sized businesses increased by 50 percent in early April due to demand from former Northpoint customers. NextWeb uses Adaptive Broadband's AB-Access(TM) equipment to provide high-speed Internet connections via fixed broadband wireless access technology. AB-Access uses radio waves transmitted over rooftop antennas to provide broadband Internet access at speeds of up to 25 megabits-per-second, or 400 times the speed of a standard 56k modem.
Quick Rescue for DSL 'Orphans'
"Because the AB-Access equipment is relatively easy to install, we were able to get most former DSL customers up and running within one to three days," said Graham Barnes, chief technology officer for NextWeb.
DataFlo, an ISP offering both wired and wireless Internet service, received frantic calls from former Northpoint customers in Northern Illinois only a month after installing its new fixed wireless network using AB-Access.
"We got our ex-Northpoint customers transferred to the new service within about three days," said Doug Coker, president of DataFlo. "These customers are getting the same data transmission speeds that DSL offered and a more reliable connection to boot," Coker added. "The AB-Access equipment is the best point-to-multipoint fixed wireless product on the market."
Based on their positive experiences with AB-Access, both NextWeb and DataFlo said they are going ahead with plans to increase their fixed broadband wireless service area coverage.
The Importance of the Shared Spectrum
Jerry Kollman, Adaptive Broadband's senior vice president, worldwide sales and marketing, said the experiences of NextWeb and DataFlo demonstrates fixed broadband wireless access technology's important role in the new broadband economy.
"Fixed broadband wireless access technology is quick to deploy and relatively inexpensive for the service provider to get up and running when compared to other current broadband access alternatives," noted Kollman.
"This is especially true for service providers operating in the shared spectrum, which requires no spectrum access fees or permits."
A recent report from The Strategis Group, a Washington DC market research firm, forecast that broadband service providers operating in the unlicensed or "shared" spectrum will see service revenues soar over the next five years to reach a 75 percent increase over 2000 levels.
