A's Star Johnny Damon Helps Seven Oakland Schools Get DSL

Covad Communications (Nasdaq:COVD), The Official Broadband Provider to the 2000 American League

West Division Champion Oakland Athletics, today identified the first seven of 22 Oakland Unified schools that it will wire as part of the Covad "JumpStart(TM)" Challenge.

Each time Johnny Damon, last year's American League stolen base champion, steals a base during home games at Network Associates Stadium, one of 22 Oakland Unified middle and high schools will be provided with a high-speed, always-on DSL connection to the school library. Since the May 15th start date of the partnership, Damon has stolen a total of seven bases including:

-- Two against New York on May 15, enabling Madison Middle School and
Castlemont High School to be the first two schools wired with DSL.

-- The third against New York on May 17, enabling Elmhurst Middle School to
receive DSL connection.

-- The fourth, against Chicago on May 19, allowing Oakland High School to
receive broadband connection.

-- The fifth, against Tampa Bay on May 29, permitting Havenscourt Middle School
to be provided with high-speed Internet access.

-- The sixth, against Baltimore on June 1, enabling Carter Middle School to
receive its DSL connection.

-- Finally, base seven was stolen while playing against Baltimore on June 3,
providing Montera Middle School with DSL Internet access.

The Covad JumpStart Challenge is a joint program between Covad and the Oakland Athletics. Covad hopes the Internet connection will provide students and teachers alike the opportunity to experience the educational possibilities of the Internet. In addition, a randomly selected fan in the stadium will win a Covad DSL JumpStart self-installation kit and one year of DSL service or tickets to an A's game.(a)

"We want to give everyone the chance to benefit from DSL," said Covad Chairman, Chuck McMinn. "Especially when in comes to education, there is a lot of great information just a few mouse clicks away and we want everyone to have high-speed, always on access to the information on the Internet."

"I am going to steal as many bases as I can so that all the Oakland middle and high schools get wired," said Oakland A's left-fielder," Johnny Damon.

"We are thrilled that the students in our schools will have the opportunity to receive high-speed Internet access from Covad," said Oakland Unified Schools superintendent, Dennis Chaconas. "We are hoping that students who haven't had the exposure to the Internet will now have the chance to access a wealth of information at their fingertips."

The Covad "JumpStart" Challenge refers to Covad's new self-installation kit, which allows residential customers to install DSL themselves. Designed with the consumer experience in mind, the DSL JumpStart Kit walks the user through a simple three-step installation process. The consumer is guided by easy instructions with pictures that provide them with the information needed for each step. The installation process includes (1) preparing the consumer's house by attaching phone filters to every telephone; (2) connecting the DSL modem to the computer; and (3) installing software that will automatically connect the consumer's computer to the Internet. It is expected that the installation process will take approximately 30 minutes.
