Take Rate For Home Fiber To Pass 50 Percent By 2011

HEADNOTE

CARRIER NETWORKS

More than half of the North American homes passed by fiber to the home (FTTH) deployments will have opted for the service by 2011, according to ABI Research.

By the time this happens, service providers will be well on their

way to transitioning from delivering service over Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON) to Gigabit PONs (GPONs) and Active Ethernet (AE), ABI projects.

"EPON has the lead within the initial part of the forecast period, but GPON will have a decisive lead in the second half of the forecast period," said ABI VP and research director Stan Schatt. "AE will gain ground against BPON and EPON as the forecast period progresses, although it will not overtake GPON. Regional Bell operating companies and other Tier One telecom operators will deploy GPON in force, while AE may be deployed by smaller operators with far lower subscriber volumes."
