Breakup of China's State Telecom Monopolies Signals Major Restructuring.

May 19--HONG KONG--China's rapidly growing telecommunications industry last week served notice that it is about to seek a higher international profile as a result of a series of restructurings.

On Thursday, the country's former landline monopoly, China Telecom, formally split into two, with its assets carved up along geographical lines.

On the same day, China Mobile (Hong Kong) announced that it had agreed to buy eight provincial cellular networks, making it a contender for the title of the world's largest mobile phone operato
