NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 1999--
Delta Three, Inc., a subsidiary of RSL Communications, Ltd. (NASDAQ:RSLC), today became the world's first Internet Telephony carrier to implement Ericsson's upgraded IPT 1.6 telephony gateways in its global network. The new system, initially
"The key to offering reliable, diverse services is to have your IP gateway act as much like a traditional telco switch as possible," said Noam Bardin, Chief Technology Officer of Delta Three. "By implementing SS7 enabled gateways, Ericsson and Delta Three have pushed IP communications to the next level."
Ericsson's IPT 1.6 gateways are considered "next generation" because of the significant improvements they impart over other IP Gateway technologies used by most other carriers. These enhancements include SS7 (Signaling System 7) compatibility; open architecture with a real time operating system, and scalability. SS7 enabled gateways communicate with traditional telecom switches seamlessly. "We now speak the same language," said Erland Lonaeus, managing director Ericsson IP Telephony. "The new gateway enhances the intelligence of the Delta Three network. The SS7 compatibility insures increased reliability in handing off calls to traditional networks and transferring calls between multiple applications, which is a huge advantage for implementing Value Added Services."
In addition, the Ericsson IPT 1.6 gateways have an open architecture based on CompactPCI, which means that increasing capacity on the Delta Three network is as simple as adding a few boards. The gateways also use a real time operating system for flexibility and greater reliability. The new IPT 1.6 is scalable to 780 channels up from 30 channels in the previous version of gateways.
