Westwave Communications, a developer of open solutions for multiprotocol convergence of voice and data services, today announced the appointment of Dr. Siroos Afshar as the company's vice president of strategic

planning and architecture. With over 20 years' experience in researching, directing, and implementing telecommunications products and services, Afshar will lead a team to establish strategic plans and design the architecture for Westwave products. His team will be responsible for ensuring Westwave's products not only meet the immediate needs of CLECs and ILECs, but also provide a powerful and flexible platform that will empower access, network, and service providers to offer innovative, multi-media services of the future.

Before joining Westwave, Dr. Afshar was the R&D manager at AT&T Laboratories, where he led a team responsible for the architecture of multimedia services on packet networks. In particular, his team focused on the design, prototyping, and evaluation of various architectures for IP Telephony. A 17-year AT&T veteran, Afshar contributed to the design, development, and delivery of numerous multi-million-dollar projects during his tenure, including telecommunications management systems and data networks featuring toll-free services, call center applications, and computer-telephony integration.

Dr. Afshar holds BSE, MSE, and PhD degrees, all in electrical and computer engineering. He has a patent in software engineering and two pending patents in IP Telephony, has been published in several technical journals and periodicals, and has spoken at many scientific and professional conferences. He is a senior member of IEEE, a member of the Association of Computing Machinery, and a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
