"Your Song" Propelled to #1 Favorite with World's First

Voice-Driven Voting System

Nuance (Nasdaq:NUAN), the global leader in software

for a voice-driven world, and Red Fig, providers of multi-platform interactive TV applications, today announced the world's first voice-driven mass media voting system. Created for Granada, the largest independent media company in the UK commercial television sector, the speech system enabled viewers to vote for their favorite Elton John song during his live broadcast from New York's Sony Studios on Saturday, March 16. Once the votes had been logged, Elton John played the UK's top ten hits before performing "Your Song," the 1971 track which viewers named their all-time favorite.

"Using speech recognition in place of touch tone dialing for this automated polling system not only ensured votes were placed accurately, but we also believe that because voting was quicker and easier, it significantly increased the number of votes cast," said Nick Applegarth, managing director, Nuance EMEA. "In addition, rather than having to remember separate telephone numbers to vote for each Elton John song, viewers only had to call one number to 'speak' their vote."

In addition to "Your Song," UK viewers rated "Candle in the Wind," "Sacrifice," "Crocodile Rock" and "Daniel" among the top five.
