Tracking Assets With Telematics
Sunday, March 1 2009
Telematics are helping contractors track and manage their equipment. The lack of standardization frustrates fleet mangers, but a solution may be on the way.
The construction sector and offroad fleet operations seem ready to take full advantage of the cost savings that fleet telematics and intelligent transportation systems can provide - if only the systems talked to each other.
Common enough among on-highway fleets, telematics - the combination of wireless communications, vehicle monitoring systems and location devices - enable fleet managers to capture streams of data about each vehicle's performance and operation.
It is the clever use of this data that allows fleet managers to improve maintenance and operations, as well as recover the costs of the system through savings on fuel, increased utilization and other factors.
While their use is growing among contractors and equipment suppliers, the lack of standardization among the telematics systems can dilute some of the efficiencies and operational gains fleet managers seek.
