Peter, great article. So much great info for ANY biz. I'm from the radio/tv side of things.... how ironic that it is the web and radio's savvy use of it that will save some stations and be the demise of others. As with Newspapers; The print publications who have been successfully allowing unfiltered dialogue with their audience about product(news-info-etc.) are winning..as with other media....the ones ignoring the "blogging economy " as John Cass put it will fall behind. If radio wants the nintendogs, managers better log on or lose out. Thanks again for the information. www.KenMatthewsMedia.com ...

Setting Goals and Measuring Success
Blogs are and should be an effective way to promote open communication both within and without a company. It provides informal avenues of feedback from customers, which should be highly encouraged. The more avenues for feedback the more proactive a company can be in helping its customers and fulfilling their needs and this is translated into a fatter bottom line. I It?s unfortunate that a lot of large companies restrict their employees (The Silent Customer) from taking part. This is just smart customer experience management if they do. No greater advocate has a company than the customer from within, the employee. However this is not necessarily the rule for small companies who are always active in finding ways to create an edge. Still Blogging is the realm of the individual and is yet to migrate to a business platform. As a communication tool blogging can serve as an opportunity to feel the heart beat of the customers and the employees/ customer as the customer and /or the employee (The Silent Customer) share without consequence or threat of reprisal their thoughts and feelings on topics associated with the company. Research has shown that employees who are stopped from spreading the word do so under fictitious names. To bad ?The Silent Customer? has a lot of power. http://cdccustomerservice.blogspot.com http://customerdevelopmentcenter.com ...

Setting Goals and Measuring Success
The problem I've experienced in my 9-5 large corporate bureaucratic job, is that those who should control the message and be responsible for the image portrayed, lack the interest in technology or lack basic technical skills to run an effective blog. Those of us that have the skills are not allowed to blog about the company or its products "as employees". Measuring effectiveness would be an even bigger challenge for our non-techs. Blogging is definitely more suited to entrepreneurial enterprises who are willing to take a chance their employees will say positive things and help grow the biz.

Setting Goals and Measuring Success
John,
I don't think there's anything I would have necessarily added. I thought the Indium case study was a great example of how a company in a niche market can use blogs to great effect to get a leg up on their competition. It's not an industry where you'd necessarily expect there to be great interest in writing or reading blogs, and yet Indium showed how it can be done.

I think the only follow up question I'd ask is whether you could list a few more companies like Indium that are in niche markets and are using (or perhaps ought to use) blogs.
