Listing Your Business in Online Yellow Pages

More

Many people still turn to the traditional yellow pages when they want to look up telephone numbers, find a particular type of business in their area, or get more information about a particular company. But as more and more people are connected to the Internet, it's equally important to ensure that your business is listed in the online yellow pages.

If you list your business in Web directories that help connect buyers and sellers — SuperPages.com, YellowPages.com and SMARTpages.com, for example — you will receive the same basic advantages as advertising in the traditional yellow pages. With both traditional and online yellow pages, you can attract new customers, establish your brand, and provide current customers with information about your business. But with online yellow pages, you will have an even greater opportunity to sell products and services because they:

  • Allow you to attract customers outside of your immediate area
  • Let mobile users and anyone with an Internet connection find your business quickly and easily
  • Provide customers with maps, driving directions, and an active link to your company's Web site
  • Give your company international exposure

Another advantage of online yellow pages is that you can update your company's information online. Instead of waiting for the next installment of the yellow pages to be released, you can update your listing when you move, get a new phone number, or change your product or service offerings.

In addition, some directories, such as Verizon's SuperPages.com, provide you with tools to help you enhance your business's listing. For example, when you create your listing you gain access to a directory selector that contains information about the directory, its service areas, circulation, and geographical characteristics; demographic information that helps you to target your ads to the people whom you want to reach; industry information about the latest trends and customer expectations; and information the number of customers in your area who use the yellow pages.

So what's the cost for all of these services? If you advertise in the traditional yellow pages, you're probably already listed at no additional charge in at least one online business directory. Some telecommunications companies automatically list companies in their online and offline directories. However, not all companies take such liberties. Visit a few online directories and search for your business.

If you want to list your business in a directory, the cost of a basic listing ranges from free to $99, with some sites charging even higher fees. Keep in mind that these rates typically don't include the fancy bells and whistles — your company logo, a link to your Web site, and directions to your business. You'll have to pay more to upgrade your listing and use the directory's services. For example, the larger directory services offer online coupons, customer acquisition services, and reporting tools for an additional cost once you buy a basic listing.
