PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 7, 1998--Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW) today announced a worldwide migration program for Digital Equipment Corp. customers who are worried about the future of the company and its product and technology roadmap in light of its pending acquisition
Packaged as the PAQ-Back program, Sun is offering Digital customers twice the normal trade-in allowance on servers and a combination of free monitors, free CPUs or free graphics for its desktop workstations. The PAQ-Back promotional pricing is effective immediately and ends June 30.
According to a recent study by the Gartner Group, OpenVMS users were under heavy pressure from their management to get off a platform nearly at the end of its lifecycle, but they had few viable and cost-effective migration options. Additional reports indicate that over the next five years about 30 percent of OpenVMS users plan to migrate to another platform, reducing the size of the customer base to about 200,000 users by 2003.
"We want Digital's customers to compare Digital's product and technology roadmap and financial stability to what Sun has to offer today," said John Shoemaker, vice president and general manager of the Enterprise System and Storage Group at Sun.
"Many more applications are available on the Solaris(TM) operating environment than on OpenVMS and Digital UNIX combined. ISVs recognize that Sun provides a more scalable and performance leading product and technology portfolio than Digital and invest their R&D and marketing efforts accordingly."
Also available from Sun are platform migration services from SunService division's business unit, Sun Professional Services. SunService provides installation services and ongoing customer-defined support via its SunSpectrum(SM), Sun's matrixed worldwide service offering.
Sun also offers Digital customers assistance with Year 2000 solutions and the knowledge that the Sun Solaris operating environment and SPARC(TM) technologies are already Year 2000 compliant.
Sun's long-term vision, stability, and end-to-end scalable solutions contribute to its strong financial position and customer loyalty. Digital's customers are encouraged to talk to Sun about UNIX(R) solutions with a future. U.S. promotional pricing information is available now, and worldwide pricing will be available next week.
