Product sampling is really matchmaking. A product and consumer are introduced, with the goal of creating a long-term relationship. It may even spark lifelong devotion.

On the other hand, it could end up as a costly one night stand. In spite of an increasing trend toward sampling, the tactic isn't right for every product. Even if sampling is the right approach, the choice of sampling venue is also critical. Like matchmaking, the road to a successful sampling campaign can be fraught with peril.

Nevertheless, manufacturers seem ready and willing to take a risk.
