Dear Editor:

I welcomed George Jochnowitz's article "The Jews of Italy" (Midstream November 2003) and can suggest that his interest in this oldest Jewish community in the world outside of Israel may profit from some further study.

Before the events of September 11, 2001 effectively curtailed Jewish group tourism, I was privileged to lead a number of scholarly trips throughout central and northern Italy, visiting countless sites of Jewish heritage. Many of Dr. Jochnowitz's questions were addressed on these tours, and maybe one day we will have the good fortun
