Getting PR Hits Over and Over Again

Sometimes I dream in pitches. That's right. I am so focused on who I'm pitching to and what I'm pitching I just can't turn it off when I'm sleeping. If only I could get a hit during those night hours. That's the thing about public relations: it never stops; there is always and I mean always more to be done. More people to pitch, more angles to think of, more media to consider. It goes on and on and on. But then so do the opportunities and I think that's what I love about the work. It's like winning tic tac toe over and over again. At least it feels that way when the hits actually happen, especially within a week's time.
So that's what I'll be writing about here. I'll talk about what makes this crazy work so appealing and rewarding and how it's practically addictive, particularly when you get some success. I'll also share some of the heartache associated with this work and how it feels when you just want to get a job at Trader Joe's or Starbuck's where you don't have to persuade anyone to take interest in your story.
I'm one of the lucky ones though, because I really do love my work. I like the clients I work with and I really believe in their products and services. That helps. But even if you're conducting public relations campaigns for areas that are not necessarily near and dear to your heart you can still find fulfillment in helping people get their points across. I was never on the debate team and although I've been a spokesperson for both the real estate and cable industries and been interviewed on for tv, print, and radio many, many times (because of my books for the most part) I really love putting someone else in the spotlight. It's like I’m that stage mother for all sorts of people. "Go ahead," I say. "You can do it." That's where the fun media training comes in if necessary. I'll write about that, too.
In the meantime, let me know what you want to read. Tell me about your jobs in publicity. Tell me who you'd like to know about in the PR world and I'll see if I can get him or her to participate in a Q&A for this blog. Send me unbelievable newspaper articles (links are good) that exemplify excellent PR. Tell me what makes you crazy about this business.
And tell your friends and favorite cousins, too. Thanks for being here.
