Windows CE On Top BMW Model

(March 6) Microsoft announced that BMW's top model, the 7 Series, is using Windows CE to run its dashboard display. Calling CE a "robust, real-time embedded operating system," the company also launched Windows CE for Automotive v3.5, the newest version of its telematics

software platform.

"When we heard about BMW's telematics vision, we knew the exceptional quality in Microsoft technology would fit hand-in-hand," says Bob McKenzie, general manager of Microsoft's automotive business unit. "The iDrive concept is a unique one, and we're proud to power the graphical user interface in the Control Display."

Created for BMW by longtime instrument supplier VDO, the so-called iDrive system has had a mixed reception from reviewers in automotive magazines worldwide.

A large console-mounted knob controls the car's navigation, telephone, climate control and other systems. However, some say that iDrive would have worked better with a computer-style mouse or touchpad. Presumably, though, these did not clinic well with the 7 Series' affluent target audience. Testers have complained that these controls are hard to access.
