BOSTON Rod Smith has joined Swardlick Marketing Group as vice president and executive creative director.

"Rod was the clear choice for us as someone who is both a strong talent, but also a manager and a person who relates well to clients," said David Swardlick,

president of the independent 40-person Portland, Maine, agency.

The Sherborn, Mass., native succeeds George Hughes, who retired last year. Swardlick's client roster includes the Maine Office of Tourism and White Rock Distilleries.

Smith spent the bulk of his career in Boston at Havas' Arnold and Interpublic Group's Hill, Holliday, Connors, Cosmopulos. Most recently, he led the creative team at Boston-based independent DiBona, Bornstein & Random for about a year.
