Steel industry watchers are encouraged by big gains in start-of-the-year shipments to makers of automobiles and home appliances.
Carmakers and their independent suppliers took 16% more steel in January 1992 than they did in the like month last year. And the appliance industry bought 17% more metal, according to data compiled by the American Iron and Steel Institute in Washington, D.C.
