QinetiQ has installed a three-dimensional (3D) stitching robot that can make dry fibre preforms in the shape of a desired component that is ready for infusion by a liquid resin to make a composite part.
The robot selectively stitches the net-shape preform in order to optimize the strength and weight to meet the precise requirements of the end application. Using the robot reduces handling and lay-up times compared with competitive techniques, claims the UK-based company, which describes itself as a defence technology and security specialist.
