In Ghent, KY, Gallatin Steel has been producing flat-rolled strip for over 10 years, but a maintenance project late last year demonstrated that nothing is routine when advanced technology--like thin-slab casting--is at the core of an operation. Gallatin's twin-shell electric arc furnace feeds molten steel to a ladle metallurgy facility for batch refining, and the ladle then travels to the caster, where it is mounted on a rotating turret as it waits to pour the steel through the tundish.
An eight-day maintenance shutdown in October 2006 included an overhaul of the thin-
