Perstorp AB in Persterp, Sweden, has developed a line of antiviral and antimicrobial amino thermoset compounds for injection and compression molding that are reported to kill the SARS virus on contact. The compounds are also said to be effective against a range of bacteria, yeasts, and molds. These Polygiene compounds contain an undisclosed antiseptic additive in urea formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, or blends of the two. Perstorp says the inherent antimicrobial and antiviral properties of the base resins are increased by the additive, which becomes a permanent part of the resin matrix and is uniformly distributed throughout a molded part. Perstorp claims there is no tradeoff of resin properties with the additive.

Polygiene compounds are aimed at products for hospitals, hotels, restaurants, public transportation, and privale residences. Perstorp has a U.S. office, Perstorp Compounds, in Florence, Mass. Tel: (413) 584-2472 * PT Direct: 173XV
