Don't forget the subs.

Sometimes we get so deeply involved with the general contractors in a bid situation, we sometimes forget the subcontractors that also work on the jobs. Many times there are concrete subcontractors who bid the "concrete packages" on these jobs and eliminate the need for the successful general

contractor to have a concrete crew on the site.

One of my biggest yearly customers is a concrete subcontractor that specializes in these concrete packages. They are well known in the industry all over the Southeast. They provide the labor and materials to build high-rise buildings, post-tensioned slabs on parking decks, and even super-flat slabs on big logistics warehouses. Along with them are the everyday subs such as electricians, block masons, and utility contactors. Not only do they use concrete on bid jobs, they also do work on a weekly basis on other projects.

If you don't think they use quite a bit of ready-mix, the next time you have a few minutes, call your accounting department and ask for the purchase total for your regular electrical, mechanical, and utility subs, You might be surprised.
