Fort McMurray in northern Alberta, Canada, is a boom town and the centre for the Athabasca oil sands industry (MM, August 1998, pp.66-69). Oil sands currently account for 34% of Canada's domestic production of crude oil and have the potential to supply up to 50 % by 2005. Alberta's oil sands deposits cover 77,000 km[super]2 and contain 1.7-2.5 trillion bbl of bitumen, of which 300 billion bbl are recoverable with existing technology. There are four major resources - Peace River, Athabasca, Wabasca and Cold Lake - of which Athabasca is the largest in both actual and potential reser
