AFS, Fansteel/Wellman Dynamics win Newcast award.

The American Foundry Society (AFS) displayed Fansteel/Wellman Dynamics', Creston, Iowa, award-winning intermediate case casting, which brought home special mention in the area of "Best Casting Solutions" at Newcast 2007, Dusseldorf, Germany, in June. All exhibitors were invited to

submit up to three castings for the competition.

One of the castings submitted by AFS was Fansteel/Wellman Dynamics' 97-1b. magnesium intermediate case design that consolidated Pratt & Whitney's 500 series engine's air inlet frame and gearbox (for accessory drives). By casting in several pipes and external hoses, Fansteel/Wellman Dynamics was able to reduce assembly and machining time for its customer, while eliminating more than six hours of assembly and processing time and reducing part weight by 11 lbs.
