Washington is a slick, elegant executive line with glass surfaces, which allows personalization and differentiation. The walnut- and sycamore-finished line offers three items with adjustable height levelers: a large executive desk with comfortable working surface, multiple organization compartments under the glass, a return left or right for extended working space, and also to allow computer hardware installations; and a bookcase with glass shelves that work as extra storage or for display.

  • Mountain Retreat executive office features executive desk, credenza, deck, file and bookcase with American traditional forms that harkens back to Old World standards of making furniture. All tops are hand hewn from randomly laid knotty rogue cherry veneers and knotty birch solids, pegged joinery, generously scaled turnings and antique bronzed hardware.

  • Waverly Place executive desk features cherry veneers and hardwood solids in a medium clear cherry finish. Tops feature planking with dips for an antique feel. Also features a secretary with four-door and two-door bookcases that will stack up to three high.

  • Desk program features five scaled-down, 60-inch desks with finished/bookcase backs and matching chairs from best-selling executive collections. They include Belle Grove in hardwood solids with cherry, satinwood, walnut and ash burl veneers, with tops featuring a marquetry pattern of the veneers; Indigo Glen, with hardwood solids and cherry and hardwood veneers in a black finish with gold hand-painted decoration and wood finished tops; Waverly Place; and Preston Ridge, in hardwood solids with cherry, mahogany and white ash burl veneers, with wood tops in a black finish with gold striping and featuring a marquetry pattern of the veneers.

  • Summit Ridge, a modular unit in pine solids and okoume veneers in an antique medium finish with heavy physical distressing. Some tops feature a herringbone veneer pattern with a leather inset.

  • Corner modular introductions include Villa Florence, in hardwood solids and cherry veneers in a medium cherry finish with marquetry tops; and Brookhaven, in hardwood solids and cherry veneers with a medium dark cherry finish and physical distressing.

  • Computer cabinets include Brookhaven and Fallston, a sophisticated transitional design in white oak solids and veneers with a slight hint of Asian design in a dark, clear brown finish with a hint of red.

  • Eight Seven Seas executive desk chairs from the Bradington-Young division work with Hooker's home office furniture.

Avanti home office and bookcase collection features wood veneer in an Espresso finish with satin metallic accents. All desks feature an angular metal leg design. Bookcases incorporate metallic frames on all glass doors. This contemporary, European-inspired design builds on other new-generation home office and bookcase offerings.

The Provence collection, featuring sophisticated styling with country French styling. Comes in a black finish with slight rub-through for chic urban appeal, while crisp white lends a cottage flavor. A small chest becomes a home office with a flip-down keyboard drawer, a file drawer and space for a printer. The collection also includes a writing desk.

Eight 16-piece home office collections will work with today's computers and printers. Includes a promotionally priced collection in a black finish, with a bookcase that is encased in glass with sliding doors. The group also includes a leg executive desk and an L-shaped desk. Seven other groups come with pecan, oak, cherry, mahogany, hazelnut, black-and-cherry and pecan-burl finishes. All groups are shown with a seven-piece work station and a partner desk, credenza desk and hutch, executive desk, filing cabinet and a set of bookcases.

  • Part desk, part storage and part docking station, the Family Communications Center is billed as a new category and concept that focuses on organization. The largest of the configurations is a transitional piece with clean, natural lines in a weathered black finish with rub-through edges over cherry veneers, accented with brushed nickel hardware. The 61-inch wide base features a laptop docking station, a five-position changing station, touch-latch doors, wire management, and a convex center drawer with pullout. The upper deck has open storage shelves, doors and a picture/accessories gallery.

  • The retro-Deco styled Alante work station has open shelving for displays, drawers, removable shelves, a docking station for a small monitor or laptop with power receptacles and data ports, file drawer and pull-out tray. Two-tone finish, brushed nickel hardware and faux leather backing on pulls.

  • Toluca Lake is a generously scaled eight-piece home office collection featuring a dark, heavily distressed rubbed finish on wormy maple and cherry. Rustic and timeworn, the collection features turnings on legs and posts and intricate beaded moldings. Elaborate carved-wood overlays peer from beneath glass-inset tabletops, with antique brass hardware. Highlights include a writing desk with an inset glass top that showcases carved overlay panels, a davenport desk with a roll top and drawers on either side, and a bookcase with a pull-out writing surface and two lateral file drawers. Desks, $995 to $1,595.

  • Packed with function and nontraditional configurations, the cosmopolitan Englewood home office comes in a clear, dark finish showcasing its cherry grains. Simple canted posts, box-mitered parting rails and clipped corners. Dark, antique brass hardware with a concentric circle design. The collection's 10 home office pieces are scaled for living spaces that characterize urban life. Highlights include a bookshelf desk with canted posts, a writing desk with a curved trestle base, and a multifunctional low bookcase with a file drawer. Desks, $995 to $1,395.

Key trends

  • Touch of glass: Companies such as Stanley and Gautier are featuring glass tops on desks. The former covers a molding, the latter is a raised-surface top.

  • Downsizing: Catering to consumers with smaller home offices, resources like Hooker, Hekman, Sligh and Stanley are offering scaled-down versions of popular pieces, emphasizing functionality for laptops, PDAs and cell phones.
