Two plants to close.

Paper products manufacturer MeadWestvaco will close two plants and cut 600 employees through a consolidation in its consumer and office products division, MeadWestvaco said recently.

The St. Joseph, MO, and Garland, TX, facilities will close by year's end. MeadWestvaco will transfer

production to other sites in North America without affecting production capacity, the company said. The consolidation will eliminate 400 employees in the St. Joseph plant and 200 in Garland.

In December MeadWestvaco an-nounced a two-year, $500 million consolidation that would include a workforce reduction of 1,000 employees in total in 2004.
