Bleak outlook for chemicals.

Date: Monday, February 1 1999

Speakers at the Chemical Industry Association's Annual Business Outlook conference in London, said that they expected continued restructuring in the chemical industry and an uncertain economic climate.

Cees Van Lede, ceo of Akzo Nobel, said he believed 1999 would not be an easy year

for the chemical industry, as in the west, offical growth rates are regularly adjusted downwards, while at the same time, price competition is fierce due to cheaper Asian imports.

Van Lede also predicted an ongoing liberalisation of world trade, which will continue to call for a global presence in most chemical markets.

Adair Turner, director general of CBI, claimed that `these are worrying times for world economy, and few sectors are more aware of these issues, because few are more exposed to global competition, than the chemical industries.'
