Two teams of scientists have won the Ciba Specialty Chemicals Research & Development Award 2003 for two specially designed trouble-shooting technologies to improve the performance of polymers.

The first team involved Hans-Rudolf Meier (Research, Coating Effects) and Gerrit Knobloch

(Application Technology, Plastic Additives) working to solve the problem of migration of antioxidants and antiozonants when used in rubber compounds. Through the development of a new type of grafting technology, the scientists were able to effectively 'ancho' the additive in the rubber polymer.

The second team, led by Philippe Bugnon (Research, Coating Effects) targeted the long-standing problem of warping caused by colouration when pigments are used in moulded plastics.

Warping has in the past, severely hampered the broader use of pigment coloured plastic for items where durable strength and stability are required, such as crates for carrying bottles and bottle tops. The team found a means to control this nucleating power of pigments in plastics through the concept of dynamic self-healing interface control.
