(Omaha, Nebraska) management professor discusses issues emerging from China's economic transition and presents insights for the study of a high-tech startup, Runway Technology Co. Ltd. Runway was founded in 1995 and today employs 200 people, 80 percent of whom work in R&D. The company provides application software and system integration services to the telecom industry. One of Tan's conclusions is that the lack of capable managers is one of the major constraints on firm growth in China. "Developing managerial resources with professional skills in running competitive organizations in a market-based economy is of paramount importance," he writes.
