Book Review - The GO Point

Tuesday, January 16 2007

Regular Management Craft reader and commenter Wally Bock (check out Wally's blog, Three Star Leadership) offers this book review of The GO Point by Michael Useem. Thanks Wally!

If you want to make better decisions, you should read The GO Point by Michael Useem.  The subtitle is: "Knowing what to do and when to do it." Stories, templates, and exercises help you master the material.

Stories are the natural way that human beings learn and Useem is a great storyteller. His stories cover a broad range of situations, industries, and countries.

Useem provides decision making templates for making urgent decisions, gathering input from others, seeing ahead, and transcending personal profit.  The templates are presented in chart form which makes them easy to use.

In chapter five, Useem presents several situations and invites you to use the tools he's provided to make decisions.

GO Point is a good read with lots of take-away value.  It won't make you willing to make decisions, but if you're willing, you'll make better decisions if you use what's in this book.

The Wharton School produced a podcast where Useem is interviewed about the book.  You can download the podcast or read an edited transcript here (subscription required).

Sounds pretty good!
