Why can't US business be left alone to produce what is needed for growth?

Wednesday, March 4 2009

That's my question today! As a small business owner I am finding it continually more difficult to grow. And by grow I mean hire more people.... you know. Hire more people which put more dollars on the street which puts more dollars into the economy which keeps the engine moving - not slowing it down with regulations and "hoops" I have to jump through.... just to hire an employee.

We pay reasonable salaries, profit share, bonuses, matching 401k plans tons of benefits and have a culture that ensures everyone here feels respected and appreciated every day (hell, just ask them). We do the right thing everyday and because we "make money" at it (which is I think we are suppose to do) we are penalized by new regulations and taxes that keep us from growing. Someone tell me how it is better for me to give more money to a government that has proven over an over again that it cannot manage it and in its history has produced no revenue nor could it..... Than to retain it and "yes" spend it - spend it IN our economy.

Here is a paragraph from Verne Harnish that hit home with me when I read it... good facts.

it might sound popular to help the other 95%, but the fact is the bulk of profits, job growth, and innovation (our main competitive weapon), come from about a half million mid-size firms – the exact firms that will be hit most directly by Obama’s tax proposals – but hey, it’s just 500,000 of us and it’s just another 40% increase in our taxes (between Obama’s proposed increases in the top two tax brackets along with his proposed increases in Medicare/Social Security taxes paid by businesses).  Do I think it’s going to have dire consequences on our country the next four years, no, but we continue to head in the wrong direction as we continue to make our growth firms less competitive.
