A new sports bar and almost 30,000 square feet in catering facilities have helped the Long Island Marriot, located in Uniondale, weather tough travel times, according to Michael Johnston, the hotel's general manager.

Like other hotels, Johnston said, the Marriot has seen a decline in its number

of mid-week business travelers, typically the meat-and-potatoes of its business. But that doesn't mean Johnston's not being positive - albeit realistic - about the economy.

"We feel the economy will rebound, hopefully by the third and fourth quarter, but we're being optimistic for 2003, obviously if there are any tragedies or catastrophies, all bets are off."

Due to "one of the best years ever" at nearby Nassau Coliseum, the Marriott's been able to make up ground in other areas. The facility has seen a tremendous boost in the number of people staying over after events, and those eating before events.

And the almost $3 million in renovations that the hotel will undergo in the coming year should also help in attracting some new customers, Johnston said.

As the newly-elected president of the Long Island Hotel and Lodging Association, Johnston noted that he's been keeping an eye on the industry, and politics, of the region.

"We're hoping that Tom Suozzi's going to turn the economy around and get some companies back here. That's what we need, some corporations coming in here."

While not at work, Johnston enjoys spending time with his wife, Patti, and their three children.
