Mission for movement

A bespoke handling system for the Aston Martin DB9 body uses various conveying and transferring techniques to deliver precise, controlled movement of the bodies. The takt time of the line is 35 minutes.

Once a body is requested, it is carried by AGV to the conveyor. The jig-slats here are installed

flush to the factory floor. A separate belt-driven powered roller conveyor takes door carriers to a buffer area. There, the doors await recall to match the body at final assembly.

The handling system, by Excel Automation, takes the body through the plant for electronics, facia, trim and linings to be added. At the end of this conveyor, a pantograph system and body carrier takes over. Also designed by Excel, this allows underside trim, drive train and road wheel fitment, and allows the operators maximum accessibility. Following wheel fitment, another 3000mm-wide jig-slat conveyor takes over.
