Spokane Antique Mall, which has operated downtown for nearly 15 years, will close its doors late next month.

Rich Meissner, who owns the antique shop with his wife, Carol, says difficult business conditions led to the couple's decision to close.

"We have noticed for a couple years the

sales just weren't there to support the business," Meissner says. He adds that locally and nationally, he has observed a downward trend in antique sales that he attributes to the soft economy.

Spokane Antique Mall leases a 5,000-square-foot, two-story building at 12 W. Sprague. It currently employs three people in addition to the Meissners.

The couple might open a new antique store, at a different location and under a different name, if conditions become more favorable in the future, he says.
