The Utah Supreme Court has reinstated a $145 million jury verdict against State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance for its handling of an automobile claim. The court supported the high punitive awards with evidence of two decades of "egregious and malicious behavior" in State Farm's claim-handling practices, asserting that the company deliberately deceived and cheated its customers, engaged in concealment and destruction of documents related to its "profit schemes" and pending litigations, and "systematically harassed and intimidated opposing claimants, witnesses, and attorneys." <
