Reform efforts to make the German language simpler has had mixed reactions. The reform's goal was to minimize the number of grammatical and spelling rules. The linguists, lexicographers, pedagogues and philologists involved in the project also suggested changes in the spelling of 185 words to better indicate their etymological roots. Opponents to the reform efforts complained that bureaucrats are instructing the Germans on how to write. On the other hand, some language experts propose that the reform should go further to combat the entry of English words into the German language.
