SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 26, 1998--Alaska Airlines today announced it will equip its entire fleet with defibrillators and enhanced emergency medical kits.
The additional emergency equipment will enable Alaska Airlines flight attendants or medical professionals who may be traveling
"The health and safety of our passengers is our primary concern," said Bill Ayer, president of Alaska Airlines. "We believe equipping our planes with defibrillators and additional medical supplies is the right thing to do, even though we realize that the situations that might require their use are rare."
Ayer also applauded the recent announcements made by other carriers who have indicated they will also be equipping their aircraft with the equipment.
According to medical studies, defibrillation greatly improves the chances of survival for those individuals who suffer sudden cardiac arrest caused by ventricular fibrillation.
Alaska will also equip its aircraft with enhanced medical kits that will be stocked with additional supplies to supplement those currently mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration.
Alaska officials said defibrillators and enhanced medical kits will be installed over the course of the next year. Currently, Alaska's fleet consists of 78 aircraft -- 42 Boeing MD-80s, 28 Boeing 737-400s and eight Boeing 737-200s. The equipment will also be installed on all new aircraft acquired by the carrier in the future.
Alaska Airlines serves 45 cities in Alaska, Mexico, Canada, Russia and five Western states.
