May 8--Chattem Inc. has settled the first of some 300 lawsuits it is facing over a product once found in its Dexatrim diet pills, paying the plaintiff $3 million plus $500,000 for fees and expenses.

Alec Taylor, president of the Chattanooga-based consumer products maker, said the company had a substantial defense but the case also had risks.

"We were the first case supposed to go to trial. This establishes a benchmark for the other cases," he said.
