Jun. 24--In a ruling expected to have a profound effect on affirmative action nationwide, the U.S. Supreme Court said Monday the University of Michigan could use race, but not racial ...uotas, in admissions.

The court's action, however, won't likely have a direct impact on California, which through Proposition 209 has banned racial preferences since 1996, experts said.
