3M's Ursu Announces Retirement; Cleary, Gottlieb Partner Named Senior Vice President, Legal...

ST. PAUL, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 19, 2002

W. James McNerney, Jr., chairman of the board and CEO, 3M, announced today that Richard Ziegler, a partner in the New York City office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton, will become senior vice president,

Legal Affairs and General Counsel, 3M, effective Jan. 1, 2003.

Ziegler will replace John Ursu, who announced his intention to retire in the first quarter of 2003, after a 30-year career with 3M.

"John Ursu has been a key member of the 3M leadership team and has provided invaluable counsel," said McNerney. "While we will miss John's exemplary leadership, we are excited that Rich Ziegler will be joining 3M."

Mr. Ziegler, 53, joined the New York City office of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen and Hamilton, one of the nation's most respected international law firms, in 1980, and was named partner in 1983. Currently, he is coordinator of their Litigation Practice Group and has served as a member of the firm's Executive Committee. He also has chaired the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Professional Ethics.

Prior to joining Cleary, Gottlieb, Ziegler was an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York. He also has served as a legislative assistant in the U.S. Congress in Washington, D.C.

Ziegler graduated summa cum laude from Yale University in 1971 and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1975.
