TAXING PRACTICE
HEADNOTEAfter almost three years of The New Tax System, non-urban practices are taking all the extra work as a mixed blessing
IMAGE PHOTOGRAPH 3ICAA Public Practice Advisory Committee chair Brendt Munro says paperwork for SMPs is doubling every 22 months.
At a press conference held at the ICAA's head office in Sydney in August, the ATO was presented with an ultimatum: lift your act or we'll start filing all returns by hard copy.
The media event was the culmination of two years of frustration and overwork among CAs, caused largely by the 2000 introduction of The New Tax System.
While the new system affected all Australians, it was the 10,000 CAs in SMPs (small- and medium-sized practices) who bore the brunt of the compliance avalanche.
