A NEW LAWYER AT THE Miami office of Morgan Lewis, Sharon Lisitzky, 29, naturally gravitated to Anne Marie Estevez, 37 (right), a mother of three and the office's only iemale partner. Both share a Cuban background. Soon the duo formed a mentoring relationship. Anne Marie guided Sharon's career by making sure she worked on varied cases and got training typically reserved for more experienced lawyers.

Nationwide, over two thirds of women of color who had mentors got promoted; only half of those without mentors did, according to a 2002 study of managers and executives.

A mentor can help you convey the bottom-line value of a multicultural background to your. employer. What's more, the best mentors will stand by you. When Sharon told Anne Marie she was leaving the firm for a court clerkship, her mentor couldn't have been more supportive.
